Sustainable Futures Programme

The UK is seeking to be at the forefront of the global green industrial revolution. Young people can play a significant role in addressing the environmental challenges they inherit if they are able to access the career opportunities that will open up.

Through the Sustainable Futures Programme – and the strategic partnership between WWF, Villiers Park Educational Trust and Founders4Schools – we are addressing this urgent need. In short, our programme will prepare young people for the future job market, not the past.

Sustainable Futures Programme objectives

Sustainable Futures will ensure that the importance and relevance of “sustainable careers” becomes an embedded component in careers education across all schools across the UK. At a practical level, we will empower teachers and parents to support a generation of 14-18 year olds at the time when they are making important decisions affecting their future ability to find fulfilling employment and make a difference in the world. Our team of experienced educators will develop tools that young people can use to make decisions leading to sustainable career pathways. Our networks of employers will provide encounters that build young people’s aspirations. With our partners’ support, we will seek to change statutory careers guidance to be fit for the green economy and we will use our powerful WWF brand to raise awareness of sustainable careers across society in the UK.

Founders4Schools facilitates meaningful business encounters in schools, embedded into a progressive programme of careers education, and students can hear first-hand what it is like to work in this thriving and dynamic area through our “Sustainability” encounter type.

Work Experience

As part of Sustainable Futures, we are also facilitating project based work experience that focuses on sustainable careers, giving young people the opportunity to experience for themselves the new and exciting opportunities that are available to them in this area. This will not only give young people an insight into the roles available to them it will also allow them to develop and demonstrate some of the skills that they will need to thrive in this area and to build their network ahead of a sustainable career.

The Vision

Our shared vision is that all young people in the UK are equipped to drive and thrive in a future green economy in which the UK can meet ambitious targets in addressing biodiversity loss, climate change and plastic pollution.
