Katrina Liao

I was raised in the USA but have been in London for over 10 years. I completed a lot of my education in the USA (bachelor’s degree / master’s degree) but also completed another master’s degree (MBA) in Europe / Asia. I work at an investment management firm. My job is highly based around math and numbers. I work on the investment side, which is underrepresented by females (< 20%). Those numbers are slowly changing. My goal is to be a role model to others and to show they can achieve whatever they want to achieve with hard work and persistence. I also hope to show an example career path for someone who likes maths.

About the Business Leaders

These business leaders have been chosen because their companies are growing quickly.

About the teacher and students

The event was created by Tom Beech for 50 students at Saint John Bosco College aged Age 13 - 15.

Event description

Maths4Girls - How maths can positively impact your future

In this 50 minute session, business leaders will share insights, lessons and tips to motivate and inspire your students to make informed decisions about their future.

Speakers will ‘tell a story’ about their career journey (up to 10mins):
• How maths played a part and how maths is relevant now
• What inspired them to choose their career path
• Their failures, as well as successes
• What their company does and why this is important
• What they enjoy most about their career
• Skills currently relevant in the jobs they are doing now.

Q&As will follow to end the session.

Ideally, I will introduce with my career and how I have come to stand before the audience, then pass on to 2 guest speakers which will hopefully leave 15mins for Q&A.

The school has asked for a focus a focus on how maths can positively impact on their future career path etc.
1120-1210 (Period 3 - circa 40 Year 10 girls)
1350-1440 (Period 6 - circa 40 Year 9 girls)

In the gap we can have lunch, potentially run a maths activity or just be available to chat further with students. If you can only do 1 of the 2 sessions that is fine also.
