Inspire our students
Business volunteers can visit their local schools to support and encourage small groups of students, to maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they aspire to be. They meet with students in small groups to answer questions, discuss routes to employment and offer guidance. Students can be grouped according to their attainment levels and should have the opportunity to think of their questions beforehand, so that every student has a meaningful encounter. For in school encounters, there is also the option of a speed mentoring format where business volunteers participate in a series of short, focused conversations about specific career questions and topics. Business volunteers meet a limited number of mentees in 10-minute time slots each. These encounters should be set up as a student-led, carousel-style activity, where groups of students move between different business volunteers, with pre-prepared quick-fire questions. Speed mentoring offers students the opportunity to ask meaningful questions to a range of different business volunteers, to gain an insight into their working life, and receive advice on the skills that are needed to be successful in today’s economy.
