About the teacher and students

The event was created by Virginia Martin for 135 students at Severn Vale School aged Age 13 - 14.

Event description

Year 9 Young Enterprise Competition on Monday 9th May and Tuesday 10th May- experience the excitement and satisfaction of mentoring the potential winning team! Attend either/or or both days.

I would be very grateful if you would be able to be a mentor on either or both of the 9th / 10th May (from 8.45-3.10). Breakfast, Lunch and free parking will be provided, as will a brief of the day. No experience in mentoring is needed, just enthusiasm for working with young people.

If you are able to volunteer for 1 or 2 days, please email noakey@severnvaleschool.com or phone 01452 720458 ext 210 for more details AND ACCEPT THE INVITE.

Are you able to help mentor a team of 7 students for one day? Becoming a Young Enterprise volunteer for one day will challenge and reward you. The excitement and satisfaction of mentoring the potential winning team will hopefully mean you’ll want to be involved next year as well! Your role will be to help our Year 9s open their eyes to the world of enterprise. By helping them make the connection between education and the world of work you will enable the students to develop the attitudes and skills they need to succeed.

Each day will involve 135 students) Year 9s will be divided into team of 6/7 and will be given a project to work on.

The Project - Year 9s will work in a team of 6-7 to come up with an idea of how best to utilise a piece of land on SV's site to benefit the school. They will be given a map showing the plot of land and be asked to come up with a sales pitch for their idea. Each group will have a mentor who will guide, advise and encourage them to produce the final polished sales pitch which they will be presenting to a judge during P5.

Each group of 6-7 will then set about working through these 4 steps with the help of a mentor

The team will work together to decide what they would like to do with land.
The team will need to work out how they would source materials or products and what the cost would be

A bid for funds will need to be devised - perhaps a project name & a logo that creates impact and communicates to Mr Johnson about what the group would like to do with the land
And finally come up with a sales pitch... 240 seconds to tell the judges about their bid and how they intend to develop the piece of land to benefit Severn Vale School

Benefits to Year 9 - This event will help students to develop key employability skills by learning by doing. They will need to use the following skills in order to succeed:

Team working

Creativity

Communication - written and verbal

Planning and organisational skills

Problem Solving

Commercial awareness
