Shape the Future with Scottish Careers Week

Be part of the inaugural Scottish Careers Week designed to encourage people of all ages to think about their future skills and shine a light on the opportunities available to them.

This session is part of a week of Career Inspiration events organised by Skills Development Scotland and Education Scotland.

These Career Inspiration Sessions run from Monday November 15th to Friday 19th and are open to all schools in Scotland. They are hosted by e-Sgoil - Scotland's National online school and are a great way for you to showcase your company and industry to the future workforce.

The sessions will be 30 minutes long, 20 minutes presentation and 10minute Q&A.
Sessions will take place daily at 9.45am, 11am, 12.30am & 2pm

In this session, we want Speakers to share insights, lessons, and tips to motivate and inspire pupils to make informed decisions about their future. We want you to tell your story about you career journey:
- What you do
- What inspired you to choose your career path and why it was a good fit for you
- The sorts of skills you use most in your job: as well as the technical skills you use, we’re particularly interested that young people hear about the ‘human skills’ you use in your job (e.g. communication skills, collaboration, problem solving, creativity, team working)
- The people that have supported your career journey
- Subjects you studied and how these are relevant now
- Your successes, as well as times where you didn't achieve what you set out to and what you learned from the experience

This will be followed by a Q&A session.

How will Pupils Benefit?
These events allow pupils to hear from real-life role models who can demonstrate the relevance and connection of what is taught in the classroom. They bring the curriculum to life and allow them to gain an understanding of what different careers entail.

They are a popular way of engaging young people with the world of work as they allow a great deal to be achieved in one setting and, when taking place in school, can provide the opportunity for a relaxed one to one conversation between young people and potential employers. This aspect is particularly important in creating interest and building confidence in future pathways for young people.

These meaningful encounters inspire young people and have a positive impact on their future life chances.

By the end of second level - I can apply my skills to get more information about jobs/careers.
By the end of BGE - I can manage my profile, share it appropriately and justify my choice of evidence.
By the end of Senior Phase - I can draw appropriately on evidence from my skills profile to help me complete application forms, create CVs and when practising interview techniques.

Age Appropriacy: This type of event is appropriate for any student aged 5 through 24. Refer to our white paper pages 9 and 11 for more details. This white paper summarizes more than 100 externally validated research papers on career pathways for students.
