About the teacher and students

The event was created by Claire Dever for 150 students at West Somerset College aged Age 13 - 14.

Event description

Learn to Earn - explores themes such as personal skills and talents, career choices, salary expectations, tax and the cost of living.

Learn to Earn is a day programme which motivates students by encouraging them to consider financial plans for the future, set goals and think about their future study options. Students gain information, advice and guidance on career planning, identifying their dream lifestyle and working backwards to see the relevance of their education and extra curricular activities

Young Enterprise will lead all programme activity, however we would like volunteers from the world of work to share their employment journey stories throughout the day. By giving 1-6 hours, you could support our programme by:
• Sharing an insight in to your current job – what do you do, what do you enjoy
• Share your career and education pathway – what part time jobs/extra-curricular activities you did, any insights in to apprenticeship or HE pathways you took, any future aspirations
• Has your journey gone as planned, did your dreams and priorities change from the students age to where you are now?
• What advice would they give to your younger self about the world of work
• Support young people to set goals – help offer students some advice as to what they need to do next to help them achieve their future success

For those that feel confident, you can share the above about yourself at the front of the class. For those that prefer not to do that, you can informally convey a little about your employment journey when interacting with students, when they’re on task with the activities.
