Event description

Inspire our students to pursue careers in STEM and creative industries through practical hands on workshops.

Bringing your sector and job to life and inspire young people to consider their career options and raise aspirations through delivering hands on practical workshops.
We had found that the number of pupils selecting STEM subjects had fallen over recent years and our research indicates that this is in no small part due to them not realizing how the subjects could be applied to different careers – including those careers in the Creative Arts Industries. I am sure you will agree that this is a very worrying trend that needs to be reversed at secondary school level in order to ensure that there are a sufficient number of graduates entering the workplace/university in the coming years. In addition to this our school has created a STEM Faculty which was nationally recognized when we achieved STEM School of the Year at the TES awards in London.

We recognise the natural links that occur between STEM and Creative Arts industries and are keen to ensure that pupils are also aware of this. Our focus for our World of Work events is to develop partnerships with a broad range of organisations involved in STEM, Business, Enterprise and Creative Arts Industries so that pupils can gain hands on experience of some of the careers and pathways that may be open to them by gaining qualifications in these subject areas.

We would be looking for a member of your organisation to volunteer for the day, or a part of the day if that is all that you can manage, in order to come in and take part in a ‘carousel’ experience where groups of pupils would rotate around different experiences. Each delegate would be delivering a workshop that would allow the pupils to see a snapshot of how the organisation/ industry developed/ works and the variety of careers that are available. Each session would last for approximately 50 minutes and be repeated up to 7 times in the day.

It is important to stress at this point that, in line with Curriculum for Excellence, the pupils should be actively involved in the session so it would be necessary for them to complete some form of task or small project within this time frame.

I am sure that you would agree that the younger our pupils are when we inspire them, the more likely they are to be focused on achieving success in their chosen area.

We would love it if you could take part in the day, or could recommend someone that would, and look forward to hearing from you in the near future with a response.
