Event description

Inspire our students

I would also like to invite you to our Career stereotypes workshop on either date of: •Monday 16th July or •Tuesday 17th July 2018.

The workshop will be attended by 60x Year 7 students (12 year olds). It will be held for a few hours and on whichever date you may be interested in, there are two time-slots available (if you could commit to both sessions - this would be great, but even one would be a big help):
First half of year group : 9.10am - 11.10am

Second half of year group : 11.30am - 2.00pm (lunch break for visitors and Year 7 in between session at 1.30pm) then an extra half an hour after lunch to finish the session for 2.00pm.

What we are looking for is employees who are doing a slightly unusual job or who have been successful in doing a particular job where due to stereotypes, people may not have assumed that they would be able to achieve what they have done or to do a particular job (ie. females working in construction for example, people who have a disability, young apprentices or graduates who have been successful in landing a good role etc...)

• We are looking for employers for each of the 4x sessions on both days so if you can commit to more than one, please let us know.
The purpose of the workshop is to dispel some of the myths concerning careers suitable for particular groups of people. By the end of the workshop, students will understand:
•The meaning of prejudice and stereotype
•What stereotypes are found in the workplace
•Ways to challenge them

The format will look like the following and was successful when we ran this event last year:
•Introduction on stereotypes and how we are conditioned to think
•Brief introduction by each employee. Share your name, where you live, family background, hobbies, something about how you did at school (but nothing that gives your job away). Please come dressed in casual clothes (not your workwear)

•In table groups of 10, students will then ask each employee questions for about 5 minutes. Please respond by giving very short yes/no answers to the questions. When the time for questioning is up, students will guess your job and write this down. You will repeat this with all the tables (6 in total).
•We will then show a video or complete another short exercise while you (the employees) change into your work clothes (if they are different).
•You will then tell the students what your job is, explain a little about what your work involves, and share a career ‘tip’. Prepare to speak for about 3 minutes.
•Finally we will review the choices made by the table groups (award a prize to the table who get the most correct guesses) and discuss what the students have learnt.

Please let me know if you able to commit to this, I would be hugely grateful of your support.
