The UK is facing a significant skills shortage with 1.4m digital professionals needed over the next five years. The BBC launched "Make it Digital", a major UK-wide initiative to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology in March 2015.

As part of the campaign the BBC has launched the BBC micro:bit, a pocket-sized codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology, which is to be given to every child in Year 7 or equivalent across the UK.
